Bobi Wine Rerouted as Kampala Rallies Intensify Ahead of Election Day
Bobi Wine’s campaign rally was blocked in Kamwokya and redirected to Old Kampala as he and President Museveni intensify campaigns in Kampala Central ahead of Thursday’s tightly contested election.
Uganda’s opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, announced on Monday that authorities blocked his planned campaign rally at Kamwokya, forcing organizers to redirect supporters to Aga Khan Grounds in Old Kampala.
Addressing supporters, Bobi Wine urged the public to gather by 9:00 a.m., describing the rally as a crucial step toward building a new Uganda anchored on job creation, expanded freedoms, and a strong fight against corruption. The development comes just days before Thursday’s highly anticipated election, with opinion polls indicating a tight race in urban areas.
Kampala Central, home to approximately 1.5 million voters, has become a major battleground. Bobi Wine is scheduled to hold his rally there today, while President Yoweri Museveni, who is seeking a seventh term in office, is expected to campaign in the same area on Tuesday.
The competing rallies come amid heightened political tension, with the opposition raising concerns over repeated police disruptions of campaign activities. Despite the challenges, supporters remain hopeful that the elections could mark a turning point for the country’s political future.
