London, UK – Travelers from the United Kingdom and other non-EU countries will face new border procedures when entering the European Union starting October 12, 2025. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) introduces biometric checks designed to replace traditional passport stamping and enhance border security.

The EES will collect travelers’ facial images, fingerprints, and passport information, storing the data digitally to monitor entries and exits across the Schengen Area. The system aims to speed up border processing while improving safety and compliance with immigration rules.

Key Points for Travelers:

  • First Entry Registration: Biometric registration is required on the first visit at designated kiosks in airports, ferry ports, and train terminals.

  • Exemptions: Children under 12 are not required to provide fingerprints.

  • Data Protection: Collected data will be stored securely for up to five years under EU GDPR regulations.

  • Future Authorization: From late 2026, travelers will also need ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) approval before traveling to the EU.

Major UK Departure Points Updated:

  • Eurostar, London St Pancras – new biometric kiosks installed.

  • Eurotunnel, Folkestone – £70 million upgrade with 224 kiosks, processing up to 700 vehicles per hour.

  • Port of Dover – infrastructure upgrades underway for smooth processing.

Officials are urging travelers to arrive early and ensure passports are valid and accessible to avoid delays. The EES rollout is part of the EU’s broader effort to modernize border management, with full implementation expected by April 10, 2026.
